Week 8B - Visual Media of Comparable Businesses

Comparable mail order pastry businesses use social media to promote themselves.

Glyka Sweets
Glyka Sweets represents a very similar business model to "Greek to Me." The business uses Facebook and Twitter to promote their business. They have 976 followers on Facebook, and they post almost daily, however they receive less than 10 "likes" per post. Their pastry images lack the appeal one would expect from a bakery business with many pictures at unfavorable angles or distracted focus. They do post compelling video clips that compel people to purchase pastries. I would post brighter, better focused dessert images on the page. The page also lacks connection to the Greek American culture, such as Greek Festivals and holidays. I would actually reduce the frequency of posts, but make more posts that ask questions and encourage feedback. They have 42 Twitter followers, and actually sent five messages on October 15th. Their remarks are engaging, however I think they should focus on increasing their customer base rather than sending too many messages.

Mackenzie Limited
Mackenzie Limited uses Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter as social media platformsa to promote their pastries. Their Facebook platform compels with fantastic fall imagery and consistent weekly posts. However, for having 2,500 followers, they only receive about 2 to 3 likes per post, and very limited comments. They should ask questions or solicit opinions in their posts to engage the customer. Their Pinterest account has only 130 followers. Their Pinterest images should reveal more of how the pastries are part of the big picture, such a pictures of beautifully set holiday tables, or teachers gifts displayed at a school holiday event, in order to inspire customers.

Smith Island Cakes
Smith Island Cakes uses Facebook and Twitter as social media platforms. They are a local bakery that also ships nationwide. They have over 9,000 followers, and seem to post only once a month, getting roughly 25 to 50 "likes" per post. Their Facebook platform goal seems inconsistent focusing sometimes on the daily local operations, and less time on the mail order business. Also, they miss opportunities to respond to customers comments and questions publicly. They should provide more imagery to reinforce their unique Maryland charm. Their Twitter images of their cakes looked much more brighter and appealing than their Facebook images, however they have not posted on Twitter in over a year and a half. They should send more Twitter posts, and give their future Facebook posts some new life and consistency with their overall business plan.

Janie's Cakes
Janie's Cakes is a small East Texas company that quickly expanded nationwide. Their social media platforms include Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter. They post a variety of appealing images and stories on Facebook for their more than 8,000 followers. Their posts include everything from reminders about Boss's Day to the founder's success story and links to ubereats. However, their posts receive minimal likes compared to the number of followers they have. They also prompt people for reviews, but they don't respond to comments consistently. They have 686 followers on Pinterest, 588 followers on Twitter, and 2,128 followers on Instagram, however their posts are similar on all platforms. I think they should redirect efforts more on Facebook and Instagram. On Facebook, they need to respond to comments, and entice more customers to like their page and posts. On Instagram, they should show additional visuals such as cakes for sympathy gifts or graduation gifts.
